BYD and Uber Forge Dynamic Partnership to Electrify Global Rideshare Operations

BYD, the leading global manufacturer of new energy vehicles and power batteries, has launched a multi-year strategic partnership with Uber. This collaboration aims to integrate 100,000 new BYD electric vehicles into Uber’s operations across significant global markets, starting with Europe and Latin America. The initiative promises to offer drivers superior pricing and financing options on the Uber platform and plans to extend into the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Both companies have set benchmarks as pioneers in the electric vehicle (EV) sector: Uber boasts the world’s most extensive on-demand EV network, while BYD is a top global EV manufacturer. Their partnership seeks to lower the total ow’ total ownership costs, hasten the adoption of EVs on a worldwide scale, and expose millions of passengers to more environmentally friendly transport options.

Uber drivers are adopting electric vehicles at a rate five times that of private vehicle owners. However, surveys indicate that the cost of EVs and the availability of suitable financing options are significant hurdles. BYD vehicles, known for their affordability, also benefit from lower maintenance and repair costs. They are ideally suited to ridesharing due to their diverse model range, superior battery performance, and exceptional build quality.

To support drivers transitioning to electric vehicles, the companies' collaborative efforts may include discounts on charging, vehicle maintenance, insurance, and tailored financing and leasing options, depending on local market needs.

Moreover, the two companies will collaborate on developing future BYD autonomous-capable vehicles for use on the Uber platform. As the most considerable on-demand mobility and delivery platform globally, Uber is uniquely positioned to introduce autonomous vehicle technology to a worldwide audience.

"BYD and Uber are united in our commitment to innovate for a cleaner, greener future, and I am eager to work together towards this vision," stated Chuanfu Wang, Chairman and President of BYD.

"This partnership represents the largest global agreement of its kind, and we are excited about the potential benefits for drivers, passengers, and urban centres alike," said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. "Switching an Uber driver to an EV can yield up to four times the emissions benefits of an average motorist due to their higher road usage. Additionally, many passengers experience their first EV ride with Uber, and we are keen to expand the awareness of EV benefits globally."

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD and CEO of BYD Americas, added, "We are thrilled to join forces with a global leader like Uber to expedite the shift to electric vehicles and make sustainable transport accessible and affordable to all. This collaboration heralds a new era in urban mobility electrification, and we anticipate our advanced EVs becoming a familiar sight on city streets worldwide."
