Drive the Impossible: Lando Norris Tackles Silverstone in a Full-Scale LEGO McLaren P1™

The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have joined forces to tackle their most formidable LEGO Technic challenge yet—a fully drivable, one-of-a-kind McLaren P1™ made entirely from LEGO Technic pieces. To elevate the stakes, they've brought McLaren F1™ driver Lando Norris to pilot this unique model around the famed British racing circuit, Silverstone.

This life-sized replica comprises 342,817 LEGO Technic elements and weighs approximately 1220kg. It features fully functional steering, making it the first large-scale LEGO construction capable of manoeuvring through challenging racetrack bends. The model has an electric motor powered by LEGO Technic Function batteries and an automotive battery, enabling it to travel further than any previous LEGO model.

The project engaged 23 specialists in design, engineering, and construction from both the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive. Over 8,344 hours were dedicated to development, utilising 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements to bring the model to fruition.

With the assembly completed, all that remained was the ultimate test. Given the car’s supercar status, who better to take the helm than McLaren F1™ Driver, Lando Norris? The British driver skilfully tackled the 5.891km track at Silverstone, a circuit deeply intertwined with McLaren’s rich racing history.

Fans can view the full video of Lando Norris completing the Ultimate Challenge in the life-sized LEGO Technic McLaren P1™ on LEGO’s website.

Ben Gulliver, Test & Development Director at McLaren Automotive, praised the LEGO Technic team for accurately bringing many of the original P1™ features to life in the full-scale model. He hopes this collaboration will inspire the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation.

Lukáš Horák, Senior Project Manager of Installations at the LEGO Group, remarked on the continuing partnership between the companies, which has been instrumental in producing a model that mirrors the original McLaren P1™ as closely as possible.

The LEGO Technic McLaren P1™ 1:8 set is now available for purchase at www.LEGO.com/McLaren and LEGO Stores, priced at £389.99 / €449.99 / $449.99, inviting enthusiasts to experience a piece of this engineering feat.
