Introducing Ariel’s E-Nomad: A Fully Electric Adventure Sportscar

Ariel Motor Company, a British manufacturer specialising in high-performance vehicles, has launched the E-Nomad concept—a fully electric variant of its versatile sportscar. The E-Nomad matches the explosive acceleration of its combustion engine counterpart, achieving 0-60mph in just 3.4 seconds while maintaining formidable all-terrain prowess. With a weight of only 896kg, the vehicle introduces innovative natural fibre bio-composite bodywork that is both recyclable and aerodynamically efficient, supporting a range of up to 150 miles (240km).

Engineered at Ariel’s Somerset facility, the E-Nomad emerges from the recently introduced Ariel Nomad 2 and is energised by a 41kWh 450-volt battery that powers a rear-integrated motor, gearbox, and inverter unit with a peak output of 210kW (281bhp).

This configuration delivers power through a single-speed gearbox, enabling exceptional on-road performance and stability in rugged terrains. The E-Nomad’s consistent torque ensures it performs robustly on and off-road, embodying Ariel's philosophy of blending intense fun with environmental responsibility.

Simon Saunders, Director of Ariel, comments on the E-Nomad’s development: "The E-Nomad concept not only signals our production aspirations but also a glimpse into Ariel’s future. Subject to rigorous testing, we may introduce the E-Nomad alongside the ICE Nomad 2, depending on customer feedback.”

In collaboration with Rockfort Engineering and Bamd Composites, the E-Nomad is a product of Ariel's 'Zero Emission for Low Volume' initiative, supported by the UK’s Department of Trade through the Advanced Propulsion Centre and Niche Vehicle Network. The vehicle showcases a potential new direction for Ariel, highlighting cutting-edge technology even at low production volumes.

Rockfort Engineering devised the E-Nomad's 450-volt battery pack, which utilises advanced Pegasus V3 modules featuring high-energy lithium-ion pouch cells. These modules are engineered to maximise energy density, balancing performance with range while keeping weight minimal. The entire powertrain benefits from an integrated thermal management system, enhancing battery longevity and efficiency across diverse driving conditions.

The E-Nomad is designed for rapid charging, accommodating AC and DC inputs, and can reach 80% charge in under 25 minutes. It also incorporates a highly sophisticated control system by Rockfort Engineering, which allows power delivery and performance profile customisation according to driving preferences.

This innovative vehicle also features a lightweight, aerodynamic body made from natural flax fibres developed by Bamd Composites, which reduces CO2 emissions significantly compared to traditional materials and offers superior mechanical strength.

Ariel is set to showcase the E-Nomad at the Cenex Expo 2024, seeking to gauge public interest and further refine the vehicle based on user feedback.
