HORSE Launches Advanced HR13 Flex Fuel Engine Production in Brazil

HORSE, a leader in innovative and low-emission powertrain systems within Horse Powertrain, has launched production of its 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder ‘HR13’ engine at its Curitiba, Brazil facility.

Specifically engineered for the South American market, the flex fuel variant of HORSE's HR13 turbo engine operates seamlessly on gasoline and ethanol, meeting the critical mobility needs of Brazil and adhering to L8 emissions standards.

This powertrain delivers a peak power of 163PS (120kW) and a maximum torque of 250Nm at just 1,600rpm, enhancing performance across all driving conditions.

The initiation of HR13 engine production marks an expansion in HORSE’s manufacturing capabilities in Brazil. This builds on the earlier launch of its 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder ‘HR10’ engine in 2024.

The HR13 features an exclusive direct injection system designed specifically for ethanol, with each cylinder boasting a centrally mounted six-hole injector operating at 200bar to ensure superior fuel atomisation. This setup not only boosts power and torque but also maintains fuel efficiency.

Following a recent R$100 million investment, the Curitiba plant will produce up to 600,000 units annually, making the HR13 a significant component of its engine portfolio.

In 2024, HORSE also invested in a gravity-casting process for aluminium cylinder heads for both HR10 and HR13 engines and expanded its powertrain and emissions testing facilities to support third-party manufacturers in the region.

Wesley Palma, Plant Director at HORSE Curitiba, commented, "The commencement of HR13 production in Brazil underscores our dedication to engineering and manufacturing solutions tailored to local demands. The HR13, with its high-efficiency flex-fuel capability, is ideally suited for Brazilian OEMs and consumers."

Patrice Haettel, CEO of HORSE, added, "Our investment in the Brazilian market and broader South America reinforces our commitment to regional needs. We consistently focus on providing tailor-made solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, ensuring our products like the HR13 engine cater specifically to the local market requirements with low-emission, high-efficiency performance."
