1968 Lancia Fulvia Sport Competizione Zagato Auctioned

In the late 1960s, Cesare Fiorio, director of the Lancia Racing Department, commissioned Zagato to craft special editions of the Fulvia. Based on the successful 1300 Lancia Fulvia Sport, these bespoke versions boasted lightweight bodywork, marking the genesis of the renowned Fulvia Sport 1.3 Competizione, a formidable contender in its class.

Powered by a 1,300cc 4V engine and featuring riveted aluminium alloy bodywork atop a steel bodyshell, the Fulvia Sport Zagato racing variant epitomised agility and power with its front-wheel drive setup. During the era's peak in hill climbs, rallies, and endurance races, this model not only stirred excitement but also exuded quintessential Italian style courtesy of Zagato's craftsmanship.

Designed for private teams and drivers, this race-ready edition was scarce, with only 25 units produced, according to credible sources. Notably, three units were allocated to Squadra Corse HF and another three to Jolly Club Milano. The Fulvia Sport Competizione clinched victories at prestigious events like the Targa Florio in 1968, 1969, and 1971, solidifying its racing legacy.

Today, approximately 19 of these iconic vehicles are believed to exist still, including chassis number #1905, once owned by Angelo Rizzo, a distinguished gentleman driver. This specific Fulvia is slated for auction on Car & Classic, Europe's premier online marketplace for classic and niche automobiles.

Maintained meticulously and boasting optimal performance, this Fulvia's auction is scheduled for January 10th. It is estimated to be worth 140,000 to 170,000 Euros. This model, preceding the famed 1600cc Fulvia Sport Competizione, holds historical significance, having participated in renowned races like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

Angelo Rizzo, alias Radec, a renowned figure in Italian touring car racing, acquired the car in 1968 following his triumph in the Italian Touring Car category championship. Under Radec's ownership, the Fulvia competed in various races, including the Targa Florio and Catania-Etna hill climb, achieving commendable results.

Subsequent owners made minor modifications to the car over time, such as adjustments to the front grille and headlights. However, its racing career eventually concluded due to evolving Group 3 regulations. Subsequent restorations ensured the car's return to its original glory, complete with Zagato's signature San Siro Red livery.

When equipped with authentic components like adjustable shock absorbers, Campagnolo rims, and Dell'Orto carburettors, the Fulvia exudes authenticity and performance. Historical documentation, including race photos and competition results, further accentuates its racing heritage.
