2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed: Celebrating 60 Years of Gordon Murray’s Automotive Innovation
Goodwood proudly announces that the Central Feature at this year’s Festival of Speed, presented by Mastercard, will honour Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) and celebrate Professor Gordon Murray CBE’s remarkable 60-year contribution to automotive design and engineering.
Standing prominently in front of Goodwood House, Gerry Judah’s monumental sculptures have become synonymous with motorsport’s ultimate summer garden party. In 2025, the Central Feature will again command the spotlight during the daily celebration moment, coming alive with festive fanfare and an impressive collection of cars representing Gordon Murray’s illustrious race and road car legacy. In a highly anticipated world premiere, GMA will also unveil a brand-new road car.
Gordon Murray has embraced his signature lightweight ethos for six decades, beginning with his role as a Technical Director in Formula 1 for Brabham and McLaren Racing, where he designed five championship-winning cars (1981, 1983, 1988, 1989, and 1990). He founded McLaren Cars Limited to create the legendary F1 before establishing Gordon Murray Design in 2007, later evolving into Gordon Murray Automotive.
Alongside the Central Feature, GMA will have a strong presence throughout the Festival, showcasing road cars in the Supercar Paddock, a dedicated area highlighting Gordon and the marque’s history, and a unique activation on the Cricket Pitch — all within a clear view of the Central Feature.
Goodwood’s modern motorsport story remains closely intertwined with Gordon Murray. 1993, he attended the inaugural Festival of Speed, where his McLaren F1 set the second-fastest time on the Hill. That same year, his Light Car Company-designed Rocket surprised organisers by appearing outside the Stables, only to be revealed as George Harrison’s car. Harrison then drove it up the Hill and became a regular Goodwood visitor.
In recent years, GMA has continued its tradition of unveiling exceptional, custom-built vehicles at Goodwood’s Members’ Meeting, including the public debut of the T.50 in 2021, the T.33 in 2022, the T.33 Spider in 2023, and the global dynamic debut of the T.50s at the 81st Members’ Meeting in 2024.
Professor Gordon Murray CBE said: “For 60 years, I have relished the challenge of pushing design and engineering boundaries in both racing and road cars. The supercars built by Gordon Murray Automotive today draw on every vehicle I’ve designed, raced, or owned, with lightweight construction, innovative materials, and the latest technologies at the core of everything we do. I am thrilled to celebrate my 60th anniversary of design and the driver-focused cars we produce at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.”
The Duke of Richmond CBE DL added: “Gordon has been part of the Festival of Speed since day one, and I’m delighted he has chosen Goodwood as the place to mark his 60-year career. His name is synonymous with engineering genius and world-class automotive design, from five motorsport world championships to creating some of the most coveted supercars ever built.”
Philip Lee, Gordon Murray Group CEO, commented: “The GMA business takes immense pride in its heritage and the wealth of road and race cars that continue to inform our design philosophy and technological vision. Gordon’s outstanding career and innovative approach influence every aspect of our work, shaping the quality, prestige, and driver-centric performance of the supercars we build today and those we will create in the future.”
This year’s Central Feature will rise above the Festival, which promises its largest-ever celebration of Formula 1, along with an appearance by four-time WorldSBK Champion Carl Fogarty. Saturday tickets for the Festival of Speed have sold out, but Thursday, Friday, and Sunday tickets are still available at goodwood.com.
