Bentley Launches Revolutionary V8 Hybrid Powertrain, Outshining the Iconic W12 Engine
Bentley unveils a groundbreaking step in automotive innovation with the launch of its new V8 hybrid powertrain, set to replace the legendary W12 engine. Dubbed the Ultra Performance Hybrid, this powertrain marks a historic achievement as the most powerful, dynamic, and efficient system in Bentley's portfolio, ideally suited for a new era of daily supercars.
The Ultra Performance Hybrid embodies Bentley’s commitment to blending traditional high-performance engines with cutting-edge technology to enhance power. Historically, Bentley pioneered supercharging in the 1920s and embraced turbocharging since the 1980s. Today, they advance further with "electrocharging," integrating a robust hybrid system to forge the most advanced and potent powertrain in Bentley’s 105-year legacy. This new system, elevating Bentley's hybrid technology, delivers unprecedented performance and efficiency with over 750 PS and an 80 km electric-only range—surpassing the W12's output by at least 91 PS.
The iconic 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine retires after two decades and 105,000 engines, so the Ultra Performance Hybrid becomes Bentley’s premier powertrain. This next-generation engine not only outperforms the W12 in power and offers substantial torque across a broader range, but it also achieves a CO2 emission rate under 50 g/km per the WLTP drive cycle.
Bentley also teased the character of this new engine today with an engine sound clip. The clip showcases a deep cross-plane bass mixed with a vibrant free-revving growl, highlighting the diverse acoustic range from electrifying silence to commanding roars.
Further details about Bentley's new electrified powertrain will be disclosed soon, underscoring Bentley’s Beyond 100 strategy to offer all models with a hybrid option. Meanwhile, enthusiasts can still acquire the last few units of Bentley’s W12 and traditional non-hybrid V8 engines at global retailers.
