Cadillac to Debut in Formula 1 by 2026: General Motors and TWG Global Announce Historic Motorsport Collaboration
In a significant development, General Motors and TWG Global have agreed in principle to introduce a Cadillac team to Formula 1 in 2026. This will mark Cadillac as the first new team since 2016, bringing the total to eleven teams on the grid. General Motors is poised to unveil a dedicated F1 power unit, establishing the Cadillac Formula 1 Team as a “full works” team capable of developing its own F1 vehicles and power units by the decade's end.
The technological advances developed for F1 will bolster GM’s drive to lead the future of transportation, incorporating advanced electrification, powertrain technology, software, and internal combustion engine innovations for consumers worldwide. Launching a Cadillac F1 team will further elevate the Cadillac brand across diverse international audiences, demonstrating GM’s technology and design expertise.
“It’s an honour for General Motors and Cadillac to enter the world’s foremost racing series, and we are committed to competing with fervour and integrity to enhance the sport for fans globally,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “This is a global platform for us to display GM’s engineering prowess and leadership in technology at an unprecedented level.”
Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Global’s motorsports businesses, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are thrilled to collaborate with General Motors in bringing a dynamic new element to Formula 1. Together, we are assembling a world-class team that will champion American innovation and deliver unforgettable experiences to race fans worldwide. We appreciate the support from the FIA and FOM and their acknowledgement of the value we can add to the championship.”
Mario Andretti, the last American F1 Champion and a new director on the team’s board, expressed his excitement: “Formula 1 was my first love, and even after 70 years, it remains my happy place. I’m elated to be involved with Cadillac and Formula 1 at this stage of my life; it feels almost surreal.”
Since GM announced its bid to join F1 in January 2023, the Cadillac Formula 1 team has been diligently assembling a team of experts specialising in aerodynamics, chassis and component development, software, and vehicle dynamics simulation. The team has operations in Fishers, Indiana, Charlotte, North Carolina, Warren, Michigan, and Silverstone, England.
GM’s rich history in motorsport and expertise in high-performance powertrains is evidenced by over 3,000 wins and over 100 driver and manufacturer motorsport championships.
Additionally, through the Cadillac F1 partnership, TWG Global operates Andretti Global, Wayne Taylor Racing, and Spire Motorsports, further cementing its presence in global motorsports.
