Caterham Confirms Horse Technologies as New Engine Supplier for 2026 Academy Championship

Caterham has finalised a formal agreement with Horse Technologies, a division of Horse Powertrain, to supply engines for the Caterham Academy Championship from 2026. The 2026 Caterham Academy car will feature Horse Technologies’ 1.3-litre, four-cylinder HR13 turbocharged engine. With bespoke tuning, it is expected to deliver 130bhp (132PS) and a peak torque of 176Nm at 5,150rpm.

Horse Technologies, part of the global Horse Powertrain joint venture between Renault, Geely, and Aramco, develops and manufactures next-generation hybrid and combustion engines alongside advanced powertrain systems. In addition to complete powertrains, Horse Technologies produces state-of-the-art engines, gearboxes, motors, batteries, and power electronics systems.

The new HR13 engine replaces the outgoing Ford Sigma power unit, which has propelled Caterham Academy cars since 2008. Since its founding in 1995, the Caterham Academy has introduced over 1,400 new drivers to competitive motorsport, establishing itself as the UK’s premier championship for rookie racing drivers.

The comprehensive Caterham Academy package provides a road-legal Caterham Seven, a championship of seven races plus one sprint, two exclusive practice days, a one-day racing licence course, trackside technical support, and expert guidance throughout the season. Competitors learn car control, race craft, and the camaraderie unique to this rookie championship.

Bob Laishley, CEO of Caterham, said: “The Caterham Academy has successfully introduced more than 1,400 rookie racing drivers to motorsport in the UK over the last 30 years. We’re very pleased to confirm our new partnership with Horse Technologies. We look forward to working with their team to introduce this new turbo engine to our competitive rookie series starting next season.”

Matias Giannini, Chief Executive Officer of Horse Powertrain, said: “Caterham is an iconic brand in the automotive and racing world, with a vibrant history. Our Horse Powertrain and Horse Technologies team is very excited to be working with them for the 2026 Academy Series. Supplying our HR13 engine for the championship is a unique opportunity for us to play a part in discovering the next generation of racing talent.”
