Audi Introduces New Global Alphanumeric Nomenclature to Standardise Model Identification
Audi is revolutionising its approach to model naming by implementing a new alphanumeric system that standardises the size and positioning of each model for customers globally. This new format replaces the previous method, which differentiated between electric vehicles and combustion engine models based on numerical designations.
"Intensive discussions and feedback from our customers and international dealers have led us to update our nomenclature," explains Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. "Our revised naming strategy immediately communicates the model's size and positioning to customers worldwide, offering a straightforward guide through our diverse portfolio."
The revamped naming structure will use a combination of letters and numbers. The letters 'A' and 'Q' will continue to indicate whether a model is a saloon or SUV. Numbers ranging from one to eight will classify models in a manner that is independent of their powertrain type, moving away from the former system that differentiated drivetrain technologies with even and odd numbers.
This new naming approach allows for a consistent alphanumeric sequence across all models, regardless of whether they are all-electric or powered by combustion engines. Model differentiation within the lineup will be achieved through the body style—options include Avant, Sedan, or Sportback—and the powertrain code, such as e-tron, TFSI e, TFSI, or TDI.
The Audi A6, equipped with a combustion engine, will be the first model to adopt this new nomenclature, underscoring Audi’s longstanding success in the full-size segment. Scheduled for a global reveal on March 4, the A6 will utilise the powertrain code to clearly distinguish between variants, like the A6 Avant TFSI and the A6 Avant e-tron. Audi has stated that there will be no retrospective renaming of models currently on sale.
