Discover Lanzante's TAG Championship: Unveiling Formula 1 Performance at Goodwood 2024

In less than six weeks, British automotive engineering experts Lanzante will unveil the ultimate celebration of Formula 1 performance for the road: the TAG Championship by Lanzante. This lightweight model combines the iconic Porsche 930 Turbo body with a top-tier motorsport powerplant in a specially engineered collection of only three cars. The first of these exclusive cars will debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Stripped down to the essentials, the TAG Championship models honour McLaren's three consecutive titles in the 1980s. They are powered by Porsche-built, period TAG engines with genuine race heritage. Each of the three cars will be named after the driver and year.

The Championship model enhances the TAG Turbo by Lanzante, which was previously showcased at Goodwood. This modern reimagining of the original McLaren-built car pairs the 1980s Porsche 911 with a TAG-branded, Porsche-built, V6 twin-turbo Formula 1 engine.

The TAG Championship by Lanzante celebrates the incredible power and performance of the golden era of Formula 1 while incorporating state-of-the-art motorsport technology and extensive use of carbon fibre to reduce weight. This rigorous weight reduction brings the TAG Championship to 920kg, shedding over 430kg from the original 930 Turbo donor car.

Each road-legal model features a genuine Formula 1 engine, specifically the race-used TAG TTE P01 1.5-litre V6 twin-turbo, which powered McLaren to three consecutive world titles with Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. The car on display, Championship ’85, houses an engine that raced during the 1984, ’85, and ’86 seasons, achieving two podiums for Alain Prost in 1985, when he won his first world championship title.

Engine experts Cosworth have re-engineered and built the 1980s period units, with all work certified by McLaren. Upgrades include new pistons, conrods, valves, valve springs, revised cams, a new airbox, a cooling system, an exhaust system, and lightweight titanium turbos, with the new turbo housings alone saving 8kg in weight.

These engineering enhancements enable the power unit to rev to 10,250rpm, deliver 625hp, and reach a top speed of 200mph. Power is transferred via a custom Porsche 993 six-speed gearbox with bespoke ratios. Despite the upgrades, the TAG Championship remains drivable on regular fuel and fully road-legal.

The overall package of the Championship model focuses more on the Formula 1 cars they pay homage to, featuring subtle details throughout the interior and exterior. This contrasts with the TAG Turbo by Lanzante, which closely matched the original McLaren-built car.

The TAG Championship models use extensive motorsport technology. At their core, they use a stiffened Porsche 930 Turbo chassis. Body panels, including the bonnet, doors, front wings, front splitter, roof, bumpers, and rear wing, are lightweight Formula 1-grade carbon fibre. The braking system has been upgraded to a bespoke, full carbon ceramic system, and the car now features an all-new Formula 1 wiring loom and a new Cosworth ECU.

Careful attention has been paid to the bodywork finish, with paintwork matched to Prost’s 1985 helmet design alongside the bare carbon finish, mimicking the original MP4/2B racecar. The car features exposed carbon for the large 1980s-style bumpers instead of the traditional rubber finish. It sits on larger versions of the original racecar’s black wheels, now 18-inch magnesium and carbon rims from Dymag, fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres.

Inside, the stripped-out interior includes a roll cage and lightweight climate control system, with several comfort features removed for weight savings, such as electric mirrors and windows. A pair of carbon-backed lightweight Recaro seats with BOSS-branded, black-and-white six-point harnesses and a Personal-branded suede steering wheel with white stitching completes the homage to the title-winning MP4/2 racecars.
