Discover the Revolutionary BMW Panoramic iDrive at CES 2025: Leading the Future of Motoring Technology
At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, BMW Group will showcase tomorrow's driving and user experience. The company will introduce the near-production version of the new BMW iDrive, highlighted by the innovative BMW Panoramic Vision. Underpinned by the latest BMW Operating System X, which serves as the intelligence hub, this cutting-edge display and operating concept will be implemented across all new BMW models from late 2025 onwards.
"High technology meets highly intuitive operation. A quarter-century of pioneering leadership in operating concepts has culminated in the new BMW Panoramic iDrive," states Frank Weber, a BMW AG Board of Management member responsible for Development. "Rooted in the new BMW Operating System X, we're enhancing one of the world's premier infotainment systems, setting a new benchmark for multimodal interaction. Starting with our first series-produced Neue Klasse model later this year, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive will become a staple in all future BMW models."
The newly designed BMW iDrive integrates four key elements into a distinctive display and operating system. The BMW Panoramic Vision, a novel Head-Up Display concept, spans from A-pillar to A-pillar, displaying essential driving information directly in the driver's line of sight on the left side (in left-hand-drive vehicles), creating a three-dimensional effect visible to all occupants. The optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display above enhances this by showing integrated navigation and automated driving information directly in the driver's field of vision, with content across both displays coordinated seamlessly.
The central display features matrix backlight technology and an updated menu structure with QuickSelect, facilitating optimal touch operation. Positioned ergonomically near the steering wheel, its free-cut design allows users to transfer content, such as widgets, to the BMW Panoramic Vision with a simple swipe.
The multifunction steering wheel, designed using BMW’s shy-tech approach, illuminates relevant buttons, providing active haptic feedback that can be operated effortlessly without looking away from the road. These buttons are thoughtfully arranged, with driver assistance functions on the left and content controls on the right.
This integration redefines BMW's philosophy of "hands on the wheel, eyes on the road," enhancing driver focus with an intuitive, user-friendly, and ergonomically optimised interface. The BMW Panoramic iDrive delivers the correct information at the right time, ideally ideally combining analogue and digital controls.
During the development of the BMW Panoramic iDrive, BMW Group involved approximately 3,000 customers in usability studies, ensuring the operating logic was data-driven and meticulously planned, closely aligning with customer preferences for personalisation.
The intelligent and adaptable BMW Operating System X, an upgrade to the existing system and entirely developed in-house, is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It offers advanced update and upgrade capabilities, ensuring longevity and backwards compatibility while readying the system for additional functionalities. Thus, BMW vehicles remain at the forefront of technology.
"The innovative BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System X signifies a significant technological advancement," comments Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President of the Connected Company BMW Group. "It offers intuitive operation, emotionally engaging experiences, and extensive personalisation, showcasing the potential of software-defined vehicles."
This holistic approach to vehicle interaction ensures every journey is uniquely enjoyable, reflecting BMW's commitment to leading the charge in user-centric technological advancements in the automotive industry.
