Electrogenic Unveils Revolutionary 'Plug and Play' DeLorean EV Conversion Kit: Experience Iconic Design with Cutting-edge Electric Drive

Electrogenic, a globally acclaimed EV technology firm, has unveiled its latest conversion model—the legendary DeLorean DMC-12—now upgraded to a clean, seamless electric drive.

Based in Oxford, UK, Electrogenic has crafted an easy-to-install 'plug and play' EV conversion kit for this iconic car, celebrated for its role in the 'Back to the Future' series. The meticulously developed 'drop-in' package is now accessible through Electrogenic's extensive, rigorously selected global network of installers, with numerous partners across the United States.

The reversible DeLorean EV conversion kit incorporates Electrogenic's exclusive, leading-edge EV powertrain technology, radically enhancing the DMC-12 by transforming it into a smooth, powerful electric performance vehicle.

Steve Drummond, CEO of Electrogenic, remarked, "Since Electrogenic's inception in 2018, the DeLorean EV conversion has attracted global interest. With its sci-fi design still captivating after over 40 years and an originally underwhelming engine, it is ideally suited for electric conversion. We are thrilled to launch our in-house developed 'plug and play' package, which equips the DMC-12 with the dynamic performance its futuristic design deserves."

This package extends Electrogenic's growing array of 'plug and play' EV conversion kits, which already include options for the Land Rover Defender, Jaguar E-type, classic Mini, and Porsche 911. The company is renowned for its bespoke conversions, such as the recently electrified 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II for Hollywood star Jason Momoa.

Moreover, Electrogenic leverages its leading technical expertise to create comprehensive 'turn-key' EV drivetrain solutions for automotive manufacturers and defence applications.

The DMC-12, conceived by former General Motors executive John DeLorean in the late 1970s, was designed as a sustainable sports car from the outset. Styled by the legendary Italian designer Giugiaro and equipped with gullwing doors, the vehicle features a unique blend of composites and stainless-steel panels to prevent rust and ensure longevity. Remarkably, three-quarters of all DMC-12s are still operational today, a testament to their durability.

DeLorean collaborated with Lotus's top engineers to realise his vision, establishing his operation in late-1970s Belfast with substantial UK government backing. Despite numerous challenges, including severe financial and time constraints and the fire-bombing of the factory during sectarian violence, the team rapidly prepared the DMC-12 for the market, achieving certification for sale in the US in just 28 months.

Despite compromises, such as the underpowered V6 engine modified for US emission standards, the DeLorean enjoyed initial success upon its release in 1981. However, sales dwindled during the early-1980s recession. Over 9,000 vehicles were produced in total before the DeLorean business closed at the end of 1982.

Today, the DMC-12 remains an iconic 20th-century automotive creation, further immortalised by its role as the time machine in the 'Back to the Future' films. The DMC-12 now boasts a state-of-the-art powertrain, delivering its original promise of sustainability and performance thanks to Electrogenic's sympathetic EV conversions. The conversion, designed for straightforward installation, features 43kWh of new OEM-grade batteries optimally placed to preserve the car's structure, ensuring the modifications are fully reversible.

The electrified DMC-12 transforms from a cruiser into a genuine sports car with its enhanced power and instantaneous torque. The new powertrain halves the 0-60 mph time to under five seconds. Enhanced by selectable drive profiles and launch control, the conversion offers a balanced, powerful driving experience, further enriched by regenerative braking for enhanced control.

This innovative conversion respects and elevates the DMC-12's legacy, promising to preserve this cultural icon for future generations. Electrogenic's proprietary EV technology supports a full range of conversions, characterised by deep engineering expertise and a commitment to quality and innovation, all developed and manufactured within the UK.
