Hyundai Launches RN24 at N Day 2024: Pioneering the Future of High-Performance Electric Vehicles
At today's 'N Day 2024' event, Hyundai Motor Company's high-performance N division proudly revealed the RN24, a pioneering 'Rolling Lab' demonstrating the future of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs).
The annual 'N Day' event celebrates Hyundai N's unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in high-performance technologies proven in motorsport, alongside a visionary outlook. The event emphasises Hyundai N's core tenets: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sports Car. These principles underscore the brand's commitment to delivering exhilarating and engaging driving experiences uniquely achievable with EV technology.
"Hyundai N stands not only as our brand but also as a testament to our commitment to innovation and high performance," stated Manfred Harrer, Executive Vice President and Head of the Genesis and Performance Development Tech Unit. "The RN24 declares our bold ambitions for the future."
As Hyundai N's latest Rolling Lab, the RN24 represents the newest evolution in a series of innovative test vehicles that bridge the gap between motorsport technology and N production models—starting with the RM (Racing Midship) series in 2012 and extending to EVs like the RN22e and N Vision 74, Rolling Labs act as crucial testbeds for high-performance technologies.
Continuing this legacy, the RN24 pushes the boundaries of motorsport technology and shapes the future of Hyundai N's electrified vehicles.
The global debut of RN24 illustrates N's vision for the near future. Driven to integrate the most potent EV powertrain into the smallest feasible package, Hyundai N applied the motorsport-capable 650 PS dual-motor power electronics (PE) system from the IONIQ 5 N. This system was installed in a compact, World Rally Championship-inspired EV chassis, creating a nimble, lightweight, and agile EV.
More than just a test vehicle, this Rolling Lab initiates new discussions about next-generation high-performance EVs. It reflects Hyundai N's daring to continue exploring new ways to enhance the electric driving experience—not merely by increasing power and speed but by focusing meticulously on drivability and precision.
The RN24 is equipped with the PE system from the IONIQ 5 N. A redesigned battery pack maintains the production model’s 84 kWh capacity. Still, it shortens the wheelbase by 340 mm, bringing it down to B-segment size, comparable with Hyundai Motor's i20 N Rally1 Hybrid World Rally Championship (WRC) competitor.
The chassis system of RN24 features a newly designed WRC-style suspension setup with rally-spec dampers and high-rigidity subframes.
Equipped with the WRC Powertrain Drive Control Logic system, this Rolling Lab enables drivers to adjust PE Power, Acceleration Sensitivity, Regenerative Brake Sensitivity, and PE Power Balance through steering-wheel buttons. This functionality mirrors the control features found in Hyundai WRC challengers. Modifying IONIQ 5 N’s advanced system enhances the battery and motor cooling performance, adding extra agility through a quicker steering setup for rally car-level response.
The vehicle also includes an external high-output sound system, with two side speakers alongside IONIQ 5 N’s N Active Sound+ setup. RN24's soundtrack is further augmented by a rear fender design acting as a soundbox, enhancing the auditory experience and creating an immersive soundtrack that complements the vehicle's high-performance capabilities.
RN24's innovative 'Rally Mode' motor torque control is a standout feature among its cutting-edge motorsport technologies. Like Hyundai N’s four-wheel drive system used on the i20 N Rally 1, this setup optimally distributes torque to all four wheels. The performance of the i20 N Rally 1’s mechanical technology is emulated by RN24’s 'Rally Mode' electronic motor torque control, simplifying the system for more realistic future production car applications.
The e-Handbrake, another technology inspired by Hyundai N’s decade-long history in the WRC, helps reduce weight by eliminating the need for physical brakes in processes such as side brake preheating and hydraulic brake installations. Hyundai recently tested this innovative technology during a stage of the WRC’s Central European Rally.
RN24 is visually distinguished by its highly rigid, exoskeleton-style exposed roll cage. Inspired by WRC concepts, this feature ensures occupant safety and enhances the vehicle's performance and stability during high-speed manoeuvres.
N Performance Parts includes Elantra N 19-inch matte black forged wheels, which enhance the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal and contribute to its performance.
Additionally, RN24 is fitted with a spoiler from Hyundai Motorsport’s Touring Car Racing (TCR) models, which boosts aerodynamic performance, increasing agility and stability. RN24 also incorporates 3D-printed gussets for improved rigidity and weight reduction.
This amalgamation of innovative features defines RN24 and Hyundai N’s approach to design, technology, and performance, pushing the boundaries of electric motorsport technology.
"RN24 epitomises Hyundai N’s commitment to advancing electric motorsport technology by prioritising the driving experience over mere specifications," explained Joon Park, Vice President of N Brand Management Group. "This Rolling Lab proves that high-performance EVs hold untapped potential, and with new technologies on the horizon, there is much to look forward to."
