Sir Stirling Moss' Rare 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL Hits Auction Block at H&H Classics Duxford Sale
Sir Stirling Moss OBE's personally ordered 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL will be auctioned at H&H Classics' Duxford sale on 19 June, with starting bids of £10,000 to £12,000. Finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic with Grey leather upholstery, this R129-model SL strengthens Sir Stirling's historic link with Mercedes-Benz, marking his victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR.
"Sir Stirling Moss, often celebrated as the finest Formula One driver to never win a world championship, graces our auction with one of his cars," says James McWilliam, Senior Specialist at H&H Classics. "This 500SL, associated with the racing legend, is expected to generate considerable interest amongst collectors."
Specially commissioned to Sir Stirling’s requirements, he collected the SL from Bremen, Germany, after its pre-delivery inspection on 24 July 1992. In August, it was registered in the UK under the distinctive ‘7 SM’ plate. The car changed hands in 1996, sold through Graypaul Ferrari at 25,602 miles, and was later purchased by the current owner in February 2006, becoming its fourth keeper. The car received significant maintenance during this tenure, including cylinder head overhauls.
Currently displaying 89,900 miles, the car features 12 primary dealers and three specialist service stamps, complemented by documentation that includes a letter confirming Moss’s four-year ownership. It comes with the original owner’s wallet, handbook, and service book.
"As well as standing out for its mechanical excellence, the car's provenance is indisputably authenticated by thorough documentation and a solid history of meticulous ownership," adds McWilliam. "We expect significant interest in this outstanding piece of Sir Stirling's history."
Potential owners wishing to view this exceptional Mercedes-Benz 500SL can do so in person at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, from midday on Tuesday, 18 June.
