Unveiling Rolls-Royce Spectre Lunaflair: A Masterpiece of Bespoke Automotive Design
Martina Starke, Head of Bespoke Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, is continually amazed at the diverse inspirations shaping their bespoke concepts. The Spectre Lunaflair is a prime example, inspired by the enchanting aura of a lunar halo. This idea sparked when a client admired a similar paint finish on another bespoke Rolls-Royce. Such a symbiotic exchange of ideas promotes a 'virtuous circle' of innovation and creativity. It is crucial to the Rolls-Royce design team as they strive to deliver exceptional value to their discerning clients.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars recently revealed the stunning Spectre Lunaflair, crafted for a prominent American client. This landmark vehicle showcases an extraordinary holographic paint finish that produces a mesmerising 'rainbow' effect.
The design of the Spectre Lunaflair draws from the optical phenomenon of a lunar halo, which appears as a colourful ring around the moon. This halo is created when moonlight passes through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds. These crystals act like tiny prisms, refracting the light to produce a dazzling array of colours akin to light through a diamond.
Over a year of meticulous experimentation was necessary to capture this effect in the bespoke paint. The process involved extensive trials of paint chemistry, application timings, and base coats to achieve the client's vision. The exceptional finish comprises seven layers of lacquer, including a particular pearlescent coat embedded with magnesium fluoride and aluminium flakes. Under low light, this coat gives a deep metallic look and bursts into a rainbow spectrum in sunlight.
The Spectre Lunaflair concept also took cues from another bespoke marvel, the Phantom Syntopia, introduced in 2023 with a dark, colour-shifting Liquid Noir finish. Inspired by the Phantom Syntopia, the client requested a lighter, more luminous version reflecting their fascination with the lunar halo.
This interchange of ideas, where one commission influences and inspires another, highlights the power of bespoke creativity at Rolls-Royce. For the marque’s collective of designers, engineers, and craftspeople, this ongoing exchange nurtures continual advancements in their craft.
The Spectre Lunaflair's dramatic exterior is matched by a fully bespoke interior that features Navy Blue, White, and Peony Pink, echoing the colours seen in a lunar halo. These hues adorn the seats, doors, and the Starlight Headliner, extending to the dual-tone steering wheel with its Navy Blue and Arctic Whitesides.
The Spectre Lunaflair will remain unique, with its exclusive Lunaflair paint finish specially reserved for the commissioning patron.
