Volvo Cars Launches Production of Fully Electric EX90 SUV in South Carolina

Volvo Cars has commenced producing its fully electric EX90 SUV at the factory near Charleston, South Carolina. This milestone introduces the first Volvo vehicle powered by core computing technology, enhancing safety features and marking a new era of innovation for the brand. The first Denim Blue EX90 off the assembly line will reach a US customer later this year.

Jim Rowan, Chief Executive of Volvo Cars, emphasised the significance of the EX90. “The fully electric Volvo EX90 marks the beginning of a new era for Volvo Cars – an era defined by safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology,” Rowan said. Produced in the USA, the EX90 underscores Volvo’s long-term commitment to its workforce in South Carolina and the broader US market.

Volvo's first US manufacturing plant, which opened in 2018 near Charleston, now produces the EX90 and the S60 saloon. With a capacity to build up to 150,000 vehicles annually, the plant has received significant upgrades. The body and paint shops have been extensively revamped, and a state-of-the-art battery pack production line has been added.

These investments ensure the Charleston plant can handle the production of the EX90 and future models, reinforcing Volvo’s long-standing presence in the United States. The company operates through a robust network of 281 dealerships across 47 states and has been in the US market for nearly 70 years.

The EX90, built on Volvo's next-generation, fully electric platform, offers a range of up to 600 kilometres on a single charge. It is the safest Volvo vehicle to date, featuring advanced passive and active safety technologies supported by a comprehensive suite of sensors. The vehicle’s design, rooted in Scandinavian principles, combines modern proportions with optimised safety, efficiency, and aesthetic appeal.

A true seven-seater, the EX90 provides ample space, versatility, and comfort, making it ideal for families. Its powerful core system ensures constant connectivity and improvements over time through software updates delivered by AI and real-time data analysis. This forward-thinking approach highlights Volvo’s commitment to staying at the forefront of automotive innovation.

Producing the EX90 in South Carolina underscores Volvo’s dedication to innovation and sustainability, cementing its role as a leader in the transition to fully electric vehicles.
