Discover the Rolls-Royce Phantom Dragon: A Bespoke Masterpiece Celebrating Chinese Culture

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars proudly unveils the Phantom Extended, a bespoke creation commemorating the Year of the Dragon. Commissioned by a discerning client from China, the Phantom Dragon represents a modern interpretation of the ancient Chinese legend of two dragons and a pearl, a theme rich with cultural significance and revered across East Asia. This magnificent vehicle marks the conclusion of the lunar Year of the Dragon and the dawn of the Phantom nameplate's centenary in 2025.

At the heart of this bespoke commission is Rolls-Royce's adept and sensitive rendition of traditional Chinese iconography, seamlessly merged with the brand's distinctive design ethos. This synthesis of Chinese cultural elements with global aesthetic appeal plays a pivotal role in advancing the luxury market in China, particularly among young, affluent consumers.

Curated by Rolls-Royce's design team in China, the Phantom Dragon is a tribute to the enduring symbol of the dragon, reflecting the client's style and preferences. This project also underscores the strategic importance of Rolls-Royce's Private Office in Shanghai, which fosters a unique cultural exchange by integrating Chinese tastes and preferences into the heart of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood.

Shuai Feng, Lead Bespoke Designer at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars' Private Office in Shanghai, said, "Our aim with this project was to powerfully yet respectfully convey China’s most revered symbols along with the client’s motifs, all while integrating Rolls-Royce’s unique design language. Our artisans have skilfully achieved this using various mediums, capturing the rich heritage of the region, the client, and our brand."

The Phantom Dragon thoughtfully incorporates Chinese iconography into the car’s interior. It draws inspiration from a legend over 3,000 years old about two protective dragons granted a divine pearl by the gods in recognition of their virtue. Instead of keeping the pearl, the dragons displayed kindness and mutual respect—a narrative that symbolises the harmony of Yin and Yang.

The car's Gallery showcases bespoke marquetry comprising 297 pieces across four types of wood, meticulously assembled by a craftsman at the Home of Rolls-Royce over three months. This intricate artwork features two dragons amid swirling clouds around a pearl, represented by the bespoke clock. The design employs Smoked Eucalyptus, Sycamore, Ash burr, and Black Bolivar veneers to create a dynamic, three-dimensional effect.

The interior is enhanced with high-gloss Smoked Eucalyptus elements, Canadel door panels, and Serenity seats upholstered in Ardent Red and black leathers. The client’s family name is exquisitely embroidered in ancient Chinese headrest calligraphy.

Completing the theme, the bespoke Starlight Headliner features an abstract depiction of two dragons in red and white, with 768 red and 576 white fibre-optic lights, complemented by 24 twinkling 'stars'.

Finished in Iced Diamond Black with a signature shimmering satin appearance, the one-of-one Phantom Dragon epitomises Rolls-Royce’s commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and bespoke luxury.
