Experience the Thrill: Man vs Machine Racing Showdown at Suzuka Circuit
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) is poised to dazzle audiences at the iconic Suzuka Circuit in Japan with its exhilarating ‘Man vs Machine Showdown’ next month. During the Super Formula double-header season finale on 9-10 November, this exhibition race marks the first time Japanese fans will witness a direct competition between human prowess and state-of-the-art AI technology.
In collaboration with Japan Race Promotion, the A2RL ‘Man vs Machine’ challenge will feature two Super Formula racecars in a direct face-off. Former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat, now A2RL's development driver, will pilot one car. At the same time, the other will operate under sophisticated autonomous algorithms and robotics, demonstrating the forefront of technological innovation.
The Dallara SF23 car, foundational to A2RL’s version and a star in Japan’s premier Super Formula racing series, is equipped with an array of advanced technology for autonomous operation. This includes seven cameras, four radar sensors, three LiDAR sensors, and a comprehensive computational stack replacing the traditional driver.
A2RL's teams have already commenced their groundwork in Japan, engaging in a rigorous testing programme to gather crucial data in preparation for this eagerly awaited showdown. This race represents A2RL’s debut international event following its launch in Abu Dhabi last April, where eight international teams competed before a whole house of 10,000 spectators for a $2.25 million prize pool.
Now in its second year, A2RL, the world’s most extensive autonomous racing series, is venturing into new regions, having recently wrapped up a European testing programme featuring Japanese rising star Juju Noda.
Stephane Timpano, CEO of A2RL, expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming event: “We are thrilled to bring this electrifying exhibition race to Japan’s renowned Suzuka Circuit as A2RL goes global. Matching humans against machines in this ultimate test for AI technology offers a spectacular display, particularly against a seasoned circuit expert like Daniil Kvyat. Fans are sure to witness an unparalleled showcase of autonomous racing.”
Yoshihisa Ueno, CEO of Japan Race Promotion / SUPER FORMULA, added: “The SF23’s development has significantly shaped our organisation's legacy, making us pioneers in this novel AI racing genre. Hosting this innovative exhibition, pitting man against machine, is fascinating and exhilarating. We welcome A2RL to the celebrated Suzuka Circuit and eagerly anticipate the ‘Man vs Machine’ event.”
