Mercedes-AMG ONE Sets New Record at Nürburgring: Unmatched Performance and Innovation
Since October 2022, the Mercedes-AMG ONE has dominated as the fastest production car on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and remains unmatched. Its only competition is itself. Recently, Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador and DTM driver Maro Engel significantly improved his lap record. With an officially measured and notarised time of 6:29.090 minutes over the 20.832-kilometre track, this hypercar, equipped with Formula 1™ technology, bested its record for production vehicles by over five seconds. This milestone establishes the Mercedes-AMG ONE as the first road car to break the formidable 6:30-minute mark. It also stands as the sole series hybrid hypercar to have conquered the world's most challenging racetrack, securing its position at the pinnacle of the super-sports-car category.
Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, conveyed his pride: "For nearly two years, we’ve held the road vehicle record. Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador Maro Engel commented on the improved conditions compared to when track segments were damp two years ago. "Today, we demonstrated the full potential of the AMG ONE," he remarked, expressing gratitude towards the Affalterbach team for their confidence. "It was an honour and a pleasure to drive this record lap in such a distinguished car."
To achieve this remarkable record, meticulous preparation and ideal track conditions were essential. Engel established the new record on his third timed lap on September 23, 2024, at 6:56 p.m. With air temperatures at 15 degrees Celsius and asphalt at 20 degrees Celsius, the Nordschleife was dry, providing perfect traction.
Like Formula 1™ drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell during their race weekends, Engel optimised using the hybrid drive’s electrical energy. This involved strategic energy recovery during braking to recharge the batteries, which is crucial for maintaining performance over the extensive track. Engel deployed the AMG ONE's four-stage Energy Flow Control (EFC) system, occasionally easing off the accelerator sooner than usual — a technique known as "lift and coast." Pre-race simulations in Affalterbach and live tests on the track provided the necessary insights, which were impeccably executed during the record lap, validated by TÜV Rheinland and officially certified by a notary.
The Mercedes-AMG Hypercar translates racetrack-oriented Formula 1™ hybrid-drive technology to the street. It has a combustion engine and four electric motors, producing a combined output of 782 kW (1,063 hp), with a maximum speed limited to 352 km/h. The car incorporates motorsport technologies such as a carbon monocoque, active aerodynamics, and a pushrod suspension system. It also features the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with a hybrid-driven rear axle and an electrically driven front axle.
Engel selected the “Race Plus” setting for the record-setting drive, activating optimal aerodynamics, tightening the chassis, lowering the vehicle, and harnessing full motor power. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) was also activated, altering aerodynamic components to reduce drag on straights and quickly increase downforce in corners.
AMG ONE owners enjoy these customisation options, including the standard MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tyres and an AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system, guaranteeing maximum stability and deceleration.
