Explore Volkswagen's Revolutionary Electric Vehicles: Affordable, Sustainable Mobility Unveiled

Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, recently unveiled the company's forward-looking strategy for its primary brand. At this event, employees were treated to an early view of the future entry-level electric vehicle from Volkswagen, priced around €20,000. Schäfer enthusiastically mentioned the December negotiation outcomes: "We have launched the most extensive future-oriented initiative in Volkswagen's history. We are actively pursuing an ambitious path to meet our shared objectives. This will make electric mobility appealing to all – a definitive aim for our brand." He also reinforced Wolfsburg's role as the epicentre of innovation and manufacturing excellence, asserting that the main factory will pioneer new automotive production standards.

Volkswagen will unveil the concept car for this new entry-level model to the public in 2027. The production model's world premiere is slated for 2027. At about €20,000, this vehicle is set to appeal to a broad range of customers. Schäfer highlighted, "An affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe. This represents the pinnacle of car manufacturing."

Daniela Cavallo, Chairperson of Volkswagen AG's General and Group Works Council, added, "The new all-electric entry-level model embodies the true spirit of Volkswagen. It is fitting that our employees at the Wolfsburg plant get the initial sneak peek before we introduce it to the wider public."

This cost-effective entry-level electric vehicle marks a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s strategic vision for the future. Along with the production version of the ID. 2all, this new model is part of Volkswagen’s upcoming electric compact car series under the Brand Group Core umbrella within the Volkswagen Group. This series will feature compact electric vehicles evolving from the modular electric drive (MEB) platform. The ID. 2all, set to launch in 2026 as Volkswagen’s premier all-electric compact car priced under €25,000, will spearhead this initiative.

Since introducing the ID product line in 2019, Volkswagen has established a strong position in the all-electric vehicle sector. It has sold over 1.35 million ID. vehicles globally, including around 500,000 ID.3 models. In the previous year alone, Volkswagen sold 383,100 electric cars.

At a recent company meeting, Schäfer emphasized the enduring importance of the Wolfsburg plant in the era of electric mobility: "The Wolfsburg plant offers a clear vision for the future. Relocating Golf production to Mexico will make room for cutting-edge technologies here. In Hall 54, we will implement innovative production methods to manufacture the electric successor to the Golf and the high-volume electric T-Roc on the new SSP platform, establishing Wolfsburg as the capital of our new all-electric compact class."

The Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) represents the future of an all-electric, fully digital, highly adaptable mechatronics platform featuring a unified system architecture.

Cavallo stated, "Wolfsburg, at the core of our group, will undertake key tasks with determination. The Technical Development team will pioneer the SSP platform, benefiting all passenger car brands within the group. This platform will be as crucial to our future success as our current platform strategy for ICE models. Over the coming years, we will focus on development and production at our main plant, which will continue to produce over 500,000 units annually. This secures a desirable vehicle segment, continuing the more than 50-year legacy of the Golf from Wolfsburg."

With the ‘Zukunft Volkswagen’ (Future Volkswagen) agreement, Volkswagen AG and employee representatives have crafted a vision combining economic stability with technological leadership in sustainable mobility. This vision will set the stage for the brand to emerge as the global leader in technology in the volume car segment by 2030.

Volkswagen's ambitious three-phase strategy includes:

  1. Catch up: Enhance competitiveness by refining cost structures and expanding the model portfolio strategically.

  2. Attack: Introduce nine new models by 2027, including the ID. 2all for less than €25,000 and the entry-level electric car for about €20,000.

  3. Lead: Position itself as the technological leader in the volume segment, setting new global standards in mobility.
