Unveiling the AGTZ Twin Tail: A Modern Tribute to Racing Legend A220 at Rétromobile 2025

Just one year after the project's initial announcement, La Squadra, a prominent collector car dealer, in collaboration with the distinguished Atelier Zagato, is showcasing their first production-ready car at the esteemed Rétromobile exhibition in Paris. The AGTZ Twin Tail, designed in bespoke configuration, draws inspiration from the legendary A220 race car of the late 1960s.

The AGTZ Twin Tail emerges from a compelling narrative centred around the A220. This racing icon revolutionised its design for agility over aerodynamics; it dramatically shifted from a long tail ideal for Le Mans’ high-speed straights to a shorter, more nimble version that excelled in hill climbing. This visionary transformation led to unprecedented success in its new racing discipline.

Over fifty years later, the legacy of the A220 continues to inspire La Squadra and Atelier Zagato. Together, they have crafted the AGTZ Twin Tail, a modern homage to the A220 featuring an innovative removable rear body section. This unique design allows the driver to switch effortlessly between long-tail and Short-tail configurations, transforming the removed section into a displayable functional art piece.

Constructed on the foundation of the A220’s spiritual successor, the A110, each AGTZ Twin Tail car is meticulously hand-built by Atelier Zagato in Milan, a reputed coachbuilder since 1919. Production is limited to only 19 units, and the first in the series, Commission #3, has already left the storied workshop.

Each unit of the AGTZ Twin Tail is distinct and shaped by extensive customisation through direct consultations and visits to Atelier Zagato’s construction site.

Commission #3 exemplifies the patrons' creative and valuable contributions to the AGTZ Twin Tail project. This vehicle, reflecting its owner’s vision of the A220 story, features chassis #1736 from 1969. It boasts an aerodynamically enhanced nose, large tail-mounted radiators, and mechanical improvements. Despite promising performance at the 24 Hours Le Mans test, it retired early due to technical difficulties.

Today, AGTZ Twin Tail Commission #3 breathes new life into this story on French terrain at the 2025 Rétromobile show. Its striking livery and bespoke elements, such as commission-specific wheels, resonate with the golden age of racing while introducing a progressive twist.

Rétromobile, now in its 49th year, remains a pivotal global platform for classic and collector cars. The debut of the AGTZ Twin Tail here highlights the project’s stature in the luxury automotive sector and reinforces La Squadra’s global prominence.

Meanwhile, Atelier Zagato presses on at full steam, with further AGTZ Twin Tail commissions underway and nearing disclosure. With the series capped at just 19 cars, the order book is quickly filling, and only a few opportunities remain to own this exclusive piece of automotive history.
